What is the First Response Scheme ?

The First Response Scheme is an organization which has been developed and is monitored by the Welsh Ambulance NHS Trust,

The Anglesey First Response scheme was set up in March 2004 and is backed by Welsh Ambulance NHS Trust,. The aim of the scheme is to assist the ambulance service when there is a possible time delay in reaching a casualty. When a 999 call is made to ambulance control, they will always dispatch the first and nearest available ambulance; as an adjunct to this service they could also ask the assistance of a nearby First Response Scheme. The aim of the scheme is to provide assistance in the form of oxygen therapy or defibrillation to a casualty with breathing difficulties or possibly with cardiac arrest.

Why Do we need this Scheme when we already have an Ambulance Service?

This Scheme has been developed to assist, not replace, the Emergency Services. The Scheme is hoping it can help by reducing the response time and provide vital treatment when necessary. The Following explain why this is critical.

Who are the Member of the Various Teams?

Members of the general public who are willing to commit their time to help the people in their community. Go to the Team page to see a few of our members

Do these People get paid?

No. The First Response Scheme is run by teams of volunteers although out of pocket expenses e.g. fuel will be paid for.

Are these volunteers trained in First Aid and Defibrillation?

YES. The Ambulance Service Trains the volunteers to a set standard as stipulated by the UK Resuscitation Council and they maintain their standards by re-qualifying every six months.

If I wanted to volunteer do I need to be First Aid qualified?

No, although a first aid background would be advantageous, ALL volunteers, regardless of whether they are First Aid qualified, have to undertake training with the Ambulance Service.

Whilst on duty, Am I insured?

YES . All volunteers are insured for personal injury and medical indemnity whilst on duty provided they remain within the bounds of their training.

As a volunteer could I be sent to deal with a casualty, who for example has been involved in a brawl and has been injured, with the possibility of hostile people around

The Ambulance control centre screen all emergency calls and will only send a First Responder Volunteer to a casualty if they know it is safe to do so i.e. casualties with suspected Cardiac Arrest/Collapse or possible accident Injury BUT ONLY IF ITS SAFE TO ASSIST
