LOCAL (2) COMMUNITY GROUP AWARDED BT COMPUTER
Local group, Anglesey First Response has been awarded an NEC internet ready PC and a contribution towards one year's BT Total broadband access as part of the BT Community Connections award scheme. In addition Microsoft® Office 2007 software is included as part of the winning package.
The scheme, now in its fourth year, has awarded more than 5,000 IT packages to thousands of community groups across the UK, benefiting over five million people, opening up a world of marketing, training, recruitment, fundraising, communications and networking possibilities to recipients.
The Anglesey First Response Schemewas among thousands that entered the award scheme across the UK and impressed judges with their ideas on how a PC would benefit their group immediately and the wider local community long term.
The group plans to use the internet to increase awareness of the scheme on the Island by continuing its efforts with the website, also using the computer at fundraising events to show the general public what is involved with the scheme.
Robert Thomas, the webmaster of the site said “We now have a dedicated computer for maintaining the site, which has previously been maintained on my own pc, we can also use the computer at various events to show people what is involved with the scheme, how we operate also possibly using it to test peoples first aid knowledge with some software”.
Beth Courtier, head of BT's charity programme said: "This award scheme aims to give as many people as possible access to the internet and allows groups to develop their projects using easier and more effective methods. Following the overwhelming success of BT Community Connections in previous years, BT is delighted to continue making a difference to many more community groups throughout the area who wouldn't normally have access to the world wide web."
To apply for a BT Community Connections award, community groups need to demonstrate how they would use the internet in an innovative way and how the wider community would benefit from the award. The closing date for Round Two is 15 February 2007.
